McDermott, Arrighetti and Santos Strikeout 16 in Win Over GreenJackets

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Will Wagner belted his second home run of the season as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (48-57) defeated the Augusta GreenJackets (43-62) 6-3 on Thursday night at Segra Stadium. The pitching staff also combined to strikeout 16 as pitching prospects Chayce McDermott, Spencer Arrighetti (W, 1-0) and Alex Santos (SV, 1) all stepped to the mound on the same night.

McDermott tossed three scoreless innings in his second professional start, allowing only two hits and striking out seven batters. He maneuvered around runners in scoring position in all three innings to secure his second scoreless appearance so far in Low-A.

Arrigetti made his Woodpeckers debut in the fourth, and surrendered a leadoff home run to Landon Stephens that opened the scoring for Augusta, 1-0. Arrigetti recovered with three straight strikeouts, and set down six in a row after punching out two more hitters in a scoreless fifth..

The Woodpeckers countered in the home half of the fourth with an RBI single from Jordan Brewer against Austin Hoffman (L, 0-2) that scored Wagner from second to tie the game, 1-1. Brewer advanced to third on a fielding error from right fielder Willie Carter, and came across to score on a sac fly from Quincy Hamilton to give the Woodpeckers a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the fifth, Kobe Kato and Michael Sandle connected with back-to-back singles to put two on for Wagner. Facing Ben Thompson, Wagner smashed a three-run home run to grow the lead to 5-1.

Santos emerged from the bullpen in the sixth and was tagged with a run on an RBI double from Carter that made it 5-2. Adonis Giron provided another counter punch with a single that drove home Justin Williams in the bottom sixth to pad the lead to 6-2.

The GreenJackets scratched across another run with an RBI double by Bryson Horne to cap the score at 6-3. Santos retired the next seven Augusta batters, tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth, to lock up the win and earn the four-inning save.

The series continues tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. E.T. Fayetteville will roll out RHP Carlos Calderon (1-1, 6.35) and Augusta’s starter is TBA.

Giron Go-Ahead Grand Slam Lifts Woodpeckers to Comeback Win

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Adonis Giron smashed a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom eighth to propel the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (43-52) to a second straight comeback win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (47-49) 9-7 on Sunday afternoon at Segra Stadium. With the win, the Woodpeckers take the series 4-2.

Myrtle Beach opened the scoring with a four-run second inning against Elvis Garcia. The Pelicans loaded up the bases on a single, a fielding error by shortstop Cristian Gonzalez, and a hit by pitch. Ezequiel Pagan doubled home two runs to make it 2-0. Josue Huma and Yohendrick Pinango scratched across two more on sac flies to extend the lead to 4-0.

Pelicans starter Daniel Palencia kept the Woodpeckers hitless through 4.1 innings, but walked Nerio Rodriguez and Giron in the fifth and was pulled from the game. Facing reliever Jarod Wright, Chad Stevens connected with a two-run double to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Aaron Brown (W, 1-0) made his Woodpeckers debut in the fifth and struck out the first batter he faced. After Jordan Nwogu singled, Jonathan Sierra bounced into a 3-6 double play that ended the inning.. Brown was tagged with a run in the sixth on an Ed Howard single that made it 5-2.

With Wright still in, Nate Perry and Giron drew walks with one out in the seventh to put runners on base for Stevens, who belted his first home run as a pro to tie the game 5-5. Stevens supplied the first two hits of the game with his big swings and drove in the first five runs of the afternoon

The Woodpeckers fielding nearly gave the Pelicans the game in the eighth on three defensive errors that led to two unearned runs against Brown and gave Myrtle Beach another lead at 7-5.

Facing Gabriel Jaramillo, the Woodpeckers rallied again on back-to-back singles from Quincy Hamilton and Rodriguez. Nate Perry was then hit on the foot with a pitch that loaded up the bases for Giron. Giron stepped to the plate and crushed a go-ahead grand slam to give the Woodpeckers their first lead of the afternoon at 9-7. The grand slam by Giron is the first grand slam Fayetteville has hit this season.

Jose Betances (SV, 3) emerged to pitch the ninth and managed two quick outs on a groundout and a flyout to Michael Sandle. Facing Nwogu, Betances struck him out to earn the save and secure the comeback victory for the Woodpeckers.

The Woodpeckers will enjoy an off day on Monday, before starting up a six-game away series with the Down East Wood Ducks with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. E.T. Both starters are TBA.
